Literature Text

You stretch your wings and yawn softly, relishing the moonlight that landed on your skin. With a pale hand you brush your (h/c) hair from your eyes, and leapt off the cliff where you had perched. You stretch your black wings and take to the sky. Your albino friend, Gilbert, is quick to follow, and soon catches up to you.
“Race to the clouds!” you shout, smiling at him, and he grins back at you, red eyes sparkling. “You know the Awesome Me is going to win,” he says, and your hand flashes out to cuff one of his silvery wings. “You’re on,” you say, and with a mighty pump of your wings, you shoot upwards, leaving Gilbert wide eyed in astonishment. “You’re not going to win that easy, (Name)!” he says, and you hear the leathery sound of his wings as he gains altitude.
“You’re cheating! You’ve got a bigger wingspan than I do, and you know it!” you call down to him, dodging a bat. “Really now? And who’s got the faster wingbeat?” he says back, and you laugh. “Touché.”
You reach the moist sky fog a few wingbeats before Gilbert, and hover until he catches up to you. “You win,” he says, out of breath, and you give him a half-smile. “Good job, the Awesome You,” you say to him, and look down at the patch of green that is the forest. “We’re really high up,” he comments, and smirks. “I wonder how long it’ll take for West to see us,” he says, and lets loose his signature laugh.
“I bet it’ll take him a f—“ you’re cut off by the sound of someone yelling. “(Name)! Gilbert! You know you’re not supposed to be up that high!” Ludwig, Gilbert’s blond-haired, blue-eyed stick-in-the-mud brother, calls up to you. You and Gilbert look down to see him taking off on the cliff towards you. “Shoot,” you mutter, and you hear Gilbert groan in annoyance. “And he’s supposed to be younger than me,” he says, and starts to float downwards in a small circle. You, preferring the faster way down, simply fold your wings against your body and shoot downwards. “Hey!” you hear Gilbert cry from above you. “Be careful, (Name)!” “Gilbert it right, (Name)! This isn’t safe!” you hear Ludwig yell, and see him pumping his wings downwards towards you, faster than you’re falling.
You smirk. “I’ve done this a million times, Gil! It’s not like I’m going to hit the ground!” You turn so that you’re facing him and the silky darkness of the night sky. “I don’t care! You’re going to get hurt!” you hear him yell, and you laugh. “Gil, seriously. you don’t have to baby me just because I’m a little younger than you,” you say, and turn to face the ground again. Your jaw drops in shock; the ground and forest are no more than 40 feet in front of you. I’m going to die, you think.
Working more on instinct than anything else, you snap your wings open to their fullest, and you slow down considerably, but not slow enough, and you hit the first of the branches, and you hear two deafening cracks to your right. The branch falls with you, onto the second layer. You look down to the ground, which is about 30 feet below you, and the second branch breaks. You feel one of your shoulders pop, and wince more in surprise than in pain; adrenaline is still running through your veins. You clear the last of the branches and fall. 20 more feet to go, you think, and wince as you expect to hit the ground.
The fall never comes. Am… Am I… Dead? you ask yourself. You open your eyes, and are met by a blinding white light. you shut them again, and you are aware of the soft beeping of a machine. You open your eyes again, a little bit, and let yourself adjust to the light. You blink a few times, and look around. You are in a white room, in a white bed. You get up and are aware of dull, pounding pain in your right wing. You grit your teeth as you turn to stretch the wing, but find that you can’t. You look over your shoulder, and see that it has been put into a cast. “Well,” you say as you notice an IV dripping into your arm. you swing your legs over the side of the bed, and the door opens as soon as you land on your feet.
Gilbert steps in, and you immediately feel an impulse to throw a barrage of questions in his general direction, but before you can ask, he starts to speak. “(Name), I’m really, really sorry that this happened,” he starts. “I shouldn’t have encouraged this and look at what’s happened to you,” he says, a small sound of despair escaping his lips. “Gil, it’s ok. It’s my fault, really,” you say to him. “Umm, also, before you say anything else, could you fill me in on what happened to me?” you ask, and he smiles a little. \ “Well, when you fell, you broke a ton of branches, right? So, the Awesome Me deduces that you hit your head against one of them and went unconscious before you hit the ground. That would kind of explain the reason why it looked like West had smacked you with his fist,” he tells you, and a his eyes widen a little. “And speaking of West…” he trails off as he flutters back through the door. You hear someone being smacked, and a few German words being exchanged between two beings, before the door is pushed open by a hand.
Ludwig steps halfway through the doorway when he sees you and stops in his tracks, blocking Gilbert, who is behind him, from getting into the room. “Hey, Lud,” you say, and stumble a bit on the cold tile. “I guess that… well, that streamlining wasn’t a good idea…” you trail off as Ludwig walks across the room to you. You wince, expecting a very stern scolding, but instead, he pulls you into his arms. “Liebe, I thought I’d lost you,” he whispers into your hair, and you just stand there like – as a human would say – a deer caught in the headlights.
Gilbert is smiling in the doorway. “I knew it, West,” he says smugly, and you feel Ludwig stiffen. He releases his iron grip on you and holds you at a distance, until you get your bearings and are able to stand on your own. “S-sorry, (Name),” you hear the blond stutter. Liebe… you think. Liebe means… love. You feel a tiny smile grace your lips, and you reach out to tap Ludwig’s shoulder. He turns towards you with an embarrassed look on his face, which switches to surprise as you pull him in and kiss him right on the lips. After a few moments, he melts into the kiss, and you feel one of his hands stroking your hair. The kiss ends all too soon, and as you pull away, from the corner of your eye you see Gilbert gawking. Ludwig is smiling a little. “Luddy, I love you too,” you say, and he blushes.
I hit a sort of block for my fanfic trade with ~echosdusk, and I read a book for inspiration. The inspiration it gave me compelled me to write this, though.
